Du cristal élémentaire à la formation géologique la plus épaisse, les roches sont la mémoire du temps : elles ont, au cours de leur genèse et de leur évolution, enregistré les événements et la durée.<br><br />
L'ouvrage présente un ensemble cohérent de résultats qui illustrent les moments clés de l'histoire de la Terre. Il réunit l'étude des principes et des méthodes de stratigraphie (principe de superposition et sa généralisation, continuité latérale), des chronomètres physiques (géochronologie basée sur les phénomènes oscillants, sur les phénomènes continus irréversibles et géochronologie nucléaire) et biologiques (biochronologie comme paléontologie stratigraphique).<br><br />
Mais pour " dater " correctement, il faut savoir choisir la bonne méthode, analyser les résultats et considérer les données à toutes les échelles. Cette démarche essentielle s'appuie en permanence sur des exemples et une iconographie couleur extrêmement riche. Un index détaillé et une bibliographie importante permettent à ceux qui le souhaitent d'accéder aux sources, voire de chercher à approfondir un thème.<br><br />
L'ouvrage est particulièrement destiné aux étudiants de licence (L2, L3), de master (MI, M2), à ceux qui préparent les concours de l'enseignement (CAPES et agrégation SVT) ou des classes préparatoires (Mines, Agro). Georges Mascle</b> est professeur émérite à l'Université Joseph Fourier de Grenoble et s'inscrit dans la lignée des scientifiques qui ont permis de quantifier dans le temps les phénomènes sur de vastes distances et de grandes échelles de temps.<br><br />
Il est l'auteur de nombreuses publications et co-auteur avec J. Debelmas du célèbre ouvrage Les grandes structures géologiques.<br />
