Les maars de l'Hérault sont peu nombreux. Ce sont des maars basaltiques, situés aux alentours du Cap d'Agde. Leur existence ne peut être découverte que par des observations géologiques.<br />

==Le Cap d’Agde==<br />

Si beaucoup de zones volcaniques françaises sont bien connues : Chaîne des Puys, Mont-Dore, Monts du Cantal, Velay …., l’ensemble volcanique d’Escandorgue est peu connu. C’est là que se trouve le complexe volcanique du Mont Saint-Loup (près du cap d’Agde), zone qui a connu plusieurs épisodes phréato-magmatiques.<br><br />
Il y a un million d’années, la région était une lagune recouvrant un sous-sol sédimentaire (calcaires et marnes). Vers -700 000 ans, un volcan basaltique se met en place et la présence d’eau provoque un volcanisme phréato-magmatique avec formation de diatrèmes et de maars. Six structures de type diatrèmes ont été relevées autour du Cap d’Agde (certains immergés actuellement). Des dépôts typiques de cette phase sont visibles dans la coupe que représente la plage de la Conque. On y trouve des tufs jaunes typiques d’une mise en place de matériel volcanique en milieu aqueux avec altération des verres volcaniques en palagonite.<br><br />
La lagune où se sont crées ces maars finit par se combler au cours des éruptions ; on passe alors à un épisode de tufs gris typiques de maars sans palagonitisation. De l’eau existe toujours sous forme de nappe phréatique. Des structures en antidunes sont bien visibles, conséquence de déferlantes basales issues des cratères d’éruption.<br><br />
Le système s’isolant totalement de l’eau, on passera ensuite à un volcanisme de type strombolien classique. L’ancien maar se remplira d’un lac de lave et de nombreuses coulées.<br> <br />
